The photos that show the American Star when the calima (sand storm) was on were taken in January 2005, the ones under blue skies were taken in December 2005.
The American Star shifted position in November 2005, and we think that the lower parts of the ship have collapsed, resulting in her now leaning to port. You will notice that the funnel has also gone. The overall effect is that she is not as impressive a sight as she once was.
 
 
 
 
 

She looks longer because she is lower in the water
The funnel was above this section. It looks as though the section that was in the sea has collapsed. Quite a bit of debris was washed up, including light bulbs and what looked like wallpaper.
Comparing this to earlier photos you can see that not much of the length has gone, but that she has collapsed.
