An Interview with the Vice Consul

When you apply for a new passport the fee you pay includes an amount to cover the cost of providing consular support to British nationals living or visiting foreign countries. They can provide a variety of support but the main services are-

Help contacting relatives and friends in emergencies.

Advice on transfering money and dealing with local authorities.

Issuing emergency passports.

Visiting British nationals in hospital, in prisons and police stations.

Providing details of local lawyers and interpreters.

The consular offical covering the Canaries is Stephen Jones, who took up that position on the 1st January 2007. From the 30th April 2007 there will be a new vice consul, Esther Martin, but at the moment the current vice consul is Anita Pavillard. The time that they have been spending in Fuerteventura has increased several times recently due to the increasing British population, and the intention is that both Fuerteventura and Lanzarote will have full time conuslar support of their own in the near future.

I met up with Anita when she visited Fuerteventura on the 26th of February 2007, in the foyer of the Atlantis Palace hotel where, although she was quite busy, she took the time to fill me in on her duties as Vice Consul.

Anita is available at specific times in the foyer of the hotel. If you want to see her you may just call in but she would prefer if you telephone or email for an appointment providing some information on the subject of your enquiry. The type of enquiries she is generally asked about are people needing advice, protection, those having accidents, support after bereavement, and enquiries from those settling here. She also gives advice on how to have money sent out to fuerteventura, take oaths, deal with declarations, issue certificates and can also read marriage banns. She also has a wealth of relevant information due to the experience she brings to the post.

If you are living or intending to live in Fuerteventura, there is a wealth of information on the website of the british consul www.ukinspain.com, and in particular notes on settling on the Canary Provice of Las Palmas.

Anita Pavillard, the Vice Consul or Esther Martin, British Pro Consul, will be available at the Hotel Atlantis Palace, Avenida Grandes Playas 12, Corralejo, between 9am and 1pm on the following dates.
