Corralejo Column

Do you live in Corralejo and want to earn some extra money, as well as gaining a worldwide audience? Could you write a page like this? If so we would like to hear from you.

This is a new feature we are adding to the site that will give some "news" about what is happening in and around Corralejo. It should be possible to update the page a couple of times a month, but that depends on what is happening.

Wally Trolly

Corralejo has a new Wally Trolly. (mini train) The old one disappeared a couple of years ago and was sadly missed by the locals and tourists alike.

The new one is brand new and very smart. It appears to be offering just a tourist trip at the moment and only seems to be running on Fridays. I am sure that will change, we will keep you informed.

Corralejo Beach hotel-Corralejo Sol

The appartments that made up the Corralejo beach hotel are now refurbished and are being sold off as individual properties on a complex now called Corralejo Sol.

The side leading onto the beach, shown in the photograph is being fitted out as shops.

Swimming from Lobos to Fuerteventura,
(Travesia a nado)

A number of swimmers left Corralejo harbour last Sunday, 14th October for the annual event to swim the 3400 metres of sea from the island of Lobos to Corralejo beach in Fuerteventura.

Anyone aged between 16 and 70 could take part in the race and 175 contestants entered not only from Fuerteventura but from other European countries. The swimmers each had a chip in their leg to help identify who they were and their race times, the record for the crossing being 32.31 minutes, this was set by Cristian Heinin 2004. Fastest female was Angela Maurer, 40:10 minutes, set in 2005, female and Jesus Collado in 41.11 minutes set the record for paralympic in 2006.

The beach in Corralejo was crowded with cheering supporters, Spanish music was being played and a commentator fed facts about the race. The experience was one of a kind and we all felt the relief that the contestants showed on their faces as they reached the beach safely. There were even two contestants who swam as a team holding a rope between them.

Overall it was another interesting event for Fuerteventura that bought locals and tourists together.

Carnival gets Underway

The Carinival got underway on Thursday evening with performances from a couple of the local Murgas, or street bands, kicking things off with a display at the recinto ferial, or fairground, that is behing the Corralejo Fiesta Gardens.

On friday there was a show involving dance troups from all over La Oliva, and the contestants for Saturday,s Gala Queen elections were introduced to an enthusiastic crowd.

Before we mosied on down; oh I forgot, the Wild West was Last year's theme, I think. This year's is cartoon characters. Anyway, before we did whatever cartoon characters do to get from one place to another we went to the Rogue's gallery for a couple of refreshing shandies, and a few of the locals were bemoaning the loss of the Carnival from the old town. Before the sports centre was bult the Carnaval was held in that area, so it didn't require a dedicated trip to call in to see how the evening was progressing. Still, everybody agreed that the residents of the old town probably get a little more sleep these days.

Missing Copper

This isn't about someone who should be on duty, but isn't, but rather the red shiny stuff, which is valuable enough to make some people think it is worth removing the wiring from wherever they can get access. The thiefs had stolen some from premises belonging to the Ayumtamiento, and a Denuncia was issued. That's a police report in English. Anyway, the Guardia Civil stopped a car near Las Playitas some time last week, and as it was carrying 700kg of copper, they thought they might have a couple of good suspects. Several people have been arrested, so if the elecrisity goes of in Corralejo it probably won't be because someone has removed part of the "national" grid.

Float to be

A lot of work goes into making a carnival float. The bare trailer has to have the design that has been agreed on turned into reality. This is one of the floats that you can expect to see in this year's parade, as photographed with a little over a week to go. It will be interesting to see the finished product.

Street name

Believe it or not this is a street name. The planners assign a code like this and and when the place gets built the plots have a code. The post office then renumber the buildings to suit themselves, or so it seems and often newly built places end up with different numbers, so that people have to quote things like 83, formerly 59. I suppose it keeps somebody somewhere usefully employed.

This particular place is behind the Oasis Papagayo. Our maps don't yet cover that area, so we needed to survey the area. The most striking thing in the area is that someone decided on Terracotta topped cobbles as paving and the tops of these have crumbled. Poor decision by someone.
