The Canarian Government have given the Cabildo of Fuerteventura until September to agree on a site for the new power station for the island. If the Cabildo can't agree a site, then the Canarian Government will choose a site.

It is now September. Have they chosen a site?

The news yesterday was that the Canarian Government has given the Cabildo and Ayuntiementos until the end of September to agree on a site.

It was on the news today that the residents of Puerto Lajas (just north of Puerto del Rosario) are going to campaign against the proposal to site the new power station just north of there.

Apparently, there has been 10 years of delays in choosing the new site. At this rate it will be another 10 years before anything happens. Well, this is Fuerteventura!!

The latest news is that the location in Monteaguda is favourite. This is located to the south of Caleta in the first valley on the other side of the hills to the south.

The ayuntamiento are keen and the main objection seems to be that the area is part of a ZEPA, which is a protection zone for birds. There is supposed to be no development in these areas, but there are examples of other things being made in this type of area including an airport somewhere or other.

All the other options have things against them. We called in the festival at Puerto lajas on the way back from the football and even the donkeys had stickers objecting to the location of the power station just to the north of there.

It was on the UK Away radio news today that the 3 main political parties in the Cabildo have agreed on the site in the district of Antigua. The decision will have to be approved by the Cabildo and the Canarian Government.

The 'bird' group protests have started about the siting of the new power station. They say that the power station will have a devastating effect on local birds, especially the rare species of hubara bustards and Egyptian vultures.

The political parties are claiming that there is a survey that has been done that shows there is next to no bird life there. Lots of the bird spotters that stay here go down there bird spotting, so they are either wasting their time or there are birds to be seen there.

I think they are still going round in circles trying to decide where to put it. Some places don't want it and the people have objected and it looks like Antigua have decided they want it but they have problems with the place they reckon is OK being some kind of place reserved for birds.

Still no decision on where the new power station is to be built.

The Canarian Government had decided on a valley south of Gran Tarajal, but because of objections they have backed down again!

The Mayor of Antigua wants it to be in a valley a couple down from Las Salinas, but part of the area is a ZEPA, which is a protection zone for birds. There seems to have been some falling out between him, Mario and the woman who is head of the PP. I think they said he should be more polite.

I see the wind turbines in Corralejo are now online producing electricity for the desalination plant.
