Besides the delays from the UK airports due to snow there have been some from all the airports in the Canaries. These have been due to industrial action by the air traffic controllers and yesterday there was a failure in the main control room for the Canary Islands, so most of the air traffic controllers had to relocate to a back up room. This took 22 minutes and then the controllers had to work with less sophisticated equipment for several hours. This meant they could handle less traffic.

When the problem was sorted more controllers were drafted in on overtime. Forty odd flights were delayed out of Fuerteventura as a result.

The security of the planes was never an issue, or so they say.

The snow in Manchester looks interesting from 2000 miles away 8)

It said in the paper yesterday that the airports in the Canaries were getting back to normal, but there were still swathes of red on the arrivals and departure boards when I went past on the bus.

The situation with the air traffic controllers is a bit clearer. The service is being deregulated to some extent and the ATC's are worried about their jobs.

The average pay of an ATC in Spain is 350 000 € a year. Yes, you have read that correctly. That's 3 times the average earnings for the job in Britain.

A dozen airports throughout Spain with less than 50 movements a day are to be automated. This includes La Gomera and El Hierro airports.

Is an ATC some sort of CEO ? you have written €350000 in your post and then you have verified it yourself, but did you not mean €35000 ?!!

An ATC is an air traffic controller, but what's a CEO?????

If an ATC in Spain is on 35,000 euros a year, that would mean that an ATC in the UK is on 11-12,000 a year!! Who would want that job!

A CEO is a Chief Executive Officer, who is one of the most highly ranked of employees in a company or corporation.

Thanks :D

A CEO over here is a school that teaches children from the age of 3 to 14, instead of the usual 3 - 11

What does "you have then verified it yourself" mean?

I wrote "Yes, you have read that correctly." to emphasise that the figure was actually 350 000, and not just the result of an overactive finger or a dodgy keyboard, depending on whether you are inclined to blame the workman or the tool.

There are 2300 people employed in this role in Spain and about 30 of them earn more than 700 000 €.

I think part of the reason that "foreign" people earn more for this job is that air traffic control of, well air traffic, is done in English, so to do the job abroad you have to be bi lingual.

I think you need a mathematical brain to do the air traffic control bit, but a linguistic brain to do learning a foreign language and not everybody that has one has the other.

"In Spain, air traffic controllers work 12-hour days made up of two four-hour shifts and two, two-hour rest periods."

How does that work?? Do they have to rest for two hours before they do the four hours, or do they have to rest for two hours when they have done their shift??

I also see that plumbers and community administrators are in well paid employment, if anyone fancies a change.

During the winter its usually happen in many countries. Snow and fog effect a lot on traffic system. I had seen in past few days that train and flight are delay because of snow and fog.
