The 6 local borough councils on the island are asking the Canarian Government for more flexibility in raising money through local taxes. All councils have seen a big drop in their income as the number of building licences issued by them has dropped dramatically. In the past the majority of their income was gained by charging developers for issuing a licence.

The budgets for Puerto del Rosario and Antigua have fallen by about 10% and 15% respectively compared to last year, but I don't think there was much building activity last year.

The number of tourists to the island also fell in the region of 15% year on year, and those that did come seemed to have less to spend. This was certainly the case with holiday home owners in the Costa Antigua area.

The ayuntamiento workers in La Oliva, the northern municipality, have agreed to reduce their working day by an hour with a corresponding cut in their wage packets.

The social services side of the budget seems to have been maintained in the various communities.
