Airports in the Canaries had their best ever year in 2011, with a total of 35 million passengers.

The figure is 12% higher than for 2010 but the increase in numbers is even bigger in some cases, particularly FUERTEVENTURA (+18.6%) and Tenerife South (+17.6%). Gran Canaria topped the individual rankings with 10.5 million passengers, ahead of Tenerife South (8.6m) and Lanzarote (5.5m). Canarian government sources this week partly atributed the bumper numbers to the effect of the current airport charge discounts offered to airlines that open extra routes to the islands.

A couple of other airport/flight related news items this week are the denunciation of three Spanish airlines who have cut flights from Madrid to the island. Some bod from a tourist organisation said it was an attack on Fuerteventura's tourism business.

There are subsidies made by the Spanish government and one of these will be withdrawn. The national government says that only Ryanair benefit from this subsidy. The Canarian that it is needed and trhat when Ryanair pull out it will be hard to replace them, I think.

I'll read the article again later.

This translation may be a bit ropey, but the gist of it is right.

The delegate for the government in the Canaries, María del Carmen Hernández Bento, made it clear that the discounts on the airline rates to the companies which were put in place last year were "temporary", and for this reason they would not be extended into 2012.

The controversy came to light when the Coalition Canarias deputy Ana Oramas explained the reason for her voting against the urgent measures being implemented by the Rajoy government was the absence of an extension to these subsidies.

To clarify the confusion on this issue Bento stated on Cadena Ser "Few companies have benefitted from these measures in the Canaries, basically Ryanair has been the only one, and that it benefits those companies that were not flying to the Canaries and then started."

She diffeentiated between these discounts and those applied for using the Canarian airports, which will remain.

"Another thing are the discounts to the low cost companies, specifically Ryanair."

In the opinion of the delegate "it is not just" to benefit "a company that has never been in our destination to the disadvantage of those that have made the Canary Islands a leading destination."

She also emphasised that "there is an unfair competition which forces the rest of the companies to readjust by stopping flights in some cases and reducing frequencies."

She forecast that when Ryanair the Canaries will have to make a double effort to recover the frequencies and flights of these companies which because of discrimination have had to readjust". "Ryanair works this way with all markets and is not going to make an exception with the Canaries. When they find betyter benefits elsewhere they will go, and this is their absolute right", she added.

In the same manner, she minimised the importance of the influence of these discounts in the increase of tourist numbers, considering that "there are many aspects that contribute", and that "it is not always the case that increasing the number of tourists is good for a destination, because you have to look at the quality in the spending of the tourists". "While the spending per tourist does not increase, the destination must continue to work hard and the low cost route isn't the best route to follow.
