This has been in the news lately.

I'm not sure of all the ins and outs, but the tv program 59 seconds will discuss it tonight.

It is on channel 1 after the Barcelona game.

It'll be in Spanish. :D

The oil drilling is covered in todays islandconnections:´
According to the Canarias Ahora paper, the Spanish government has given assurances that no drilling will take place less than 50 km from the coast but plans seen by the paper appear to show otherwise. The island and neighbouring Lanzarote are furious at the prospect of oil platforms and potential spillages on their doorstep. Spain says that even if it does not authorise the test drillings, Morocco has already reached agreements with oil firms to enable them to carry out exploratory work in its territorial waters, a short distance off the eastern Canary Islands.
The row over permission granted to oil multinationals to drill off the coast of the Canaries has escalated further today with allegations that one of the authorised sectors lies just 13 km off Fuerteventura.´

I didn't watch the program in the end as I was asleep on the sofa. But it was on.

 One bod said the Canaries has a surplus of alternative energy sources so doesn't need the oil. Another said the tourists need the oil for the planes and boats so can't moan.

It was said that the wells in/off Africa had bee expected to be productive for a dozen years, but had only been so for four or five.

Besides the prospecting ecological aspects the political side has to be taken into account. The CC Coalicion Canaria were able to extract concessions from the previous national government as the PSOE Socialists needed the two votes the CC had at national level to keep going.

These concessions included flight subsidies that have been removed. These benefited new route providers ie Ryanair.

There may well be a little political payback involved in what happens next along with the fact that right wing parties such as the PP are funded by and act in the interests of business before people.

The Spanish government have issued the licences for the test drilling to be done, not bothering to consult with the local government on the grounds of national interest.

There is a protest planned in Puerto tonight at 7pm.

Someone has been writing rude things about the PP on walls in Fuerteventura.

Canarias7 said they were beyond insults, but didn't say what they said.

The protest was attended by several thousand people, which I guess would be regarded as a success.

The PP are claiming the Cabildo paid for the protest and that no one turned up. :D

I drove up Leon Y Castillo at 7pm on Saturday night, and there were a lot of people in front of the church and in the pedestrianised Primero de Mayo. It was also well covered on the Canarian TV news.
