The local business men and women are up in arms about the 27 YEAR delay in making improvements to the beach at El Castillo, or Caleta. If there is no sign of action by March 1st they are going to protest by bringing the island to a halt. Was anyone here 27 years ago?

This would be a fabulous thing, hope it happens and new beach would be like the ones made in Atlantico Shopping Center. Hopefully they can made the whole promenade from Caleta to Atlantico at the same time.

Yesterday Canarias7 wrote some news about upgraiding the beach in Caleta. As far as i can understand it means that it won´t happen... :(

I think there are political problems in Antigua town council which are now affecting this project. There are political problems, and they are affecting the project, but I can't work out how.

I thought that it was the Spanish Government's Coasts Department who were going to do the upgrade, and it wasn't the responsibility of Antigua Council. :|

In yesterdays La Provincia they said that Antigua Council has turned green light to this wonderful project.
There has been new news every day and as far as i have followed El Cabildo de Fuerteventura has now been pushing Antigua Council to start this project.
I also noticed you had good demonstration in Caleta for this :D

Yes, there was a protest and the Mayor seemed to take this on board. The was some sort of blockage that had something to do with the ayuntamiento and this seems to have been cleared.

Of course we won't believe it will happen until the machinery turns up, but it is looking more hopeful.

It will happen sometime.

However, the beach is not as bad as the local press and businesses make out! It's no different to the beaches in Corralejo or some of the lagoons in El Cotillo.

We use the beach reguarly and have no complaints.

It was on the UK AwayFM news today that the Mayor of Antigua, went to Madrid, and has handed in the plans for the Caleta beach upgrade and the compulsory purchase of land to complete the marine walkway.

There is an article about it in the latest edition of El Sol News.

It doesn't give any dates, but there was a meeting on July 29 with the Mayor. He said that the work would take 8 months. Half of the beach would be closed at a time, to avoid any major disruption.

I'll put a posting on here as soon as there is any news.

In La Provincia there is a long story about this matter and also other things in Caleta (building schools etc.)
Hope these come true soon!
