Well, almost.

There have been rumblings since mid July on and around El Hierro, which is a small mountainous Canary Island to the weat of Tenerife.

The eruption took place 4 km from the island below the sea at a depth of between 700 and 1000 metres, so there is nothing to see.

The rumblings have been due to a build up of pressure and have been recorded as small earthquakes, a handful of which were strong enough to be felt.

The locals have been on alert and a couple of weeks agos some were evacuated from their houses.

A town of 600 or so inhabitants has been evacuated this afternoon. It´s the place closest to the action!

Yes, they have gone to red alert, which is the top level.

547 people have been evacuated.

There seems to be some fear that there will be an eruption nearer the surface with greater "explosivity".

I womder if they will let me go to take some photos??

They were looking for volunteers last week to volcano watch - expenses paid for!

There has been another eruption nearer the coast.

What can be seen is a green stain in the water.

I know swimming pools that have suffered from green stains. I wonder if anyone will claim that this has been happening due to volcanic eruptions below the pool, and how many people would believe it was true if told by the "right" person. :D

There is a tunnel closed on the island, which might not seem to bad, but to get round it you have to drive to about 1000m above sea level.

There are now bubbles visible and they are talking about allowing the people who have been evacuated back home.

The tunnel may be open too. The tunnel reduces travelling time between the two towns it connects from about an hour to twenty minutes!!!

I haven't followed this story too closely.

The eruption to the south of the island created a new valcano that is 100m high and 240 in diameter, but is below the sea.

The stain in the sea caused by the eruption has spread to be twice the size of the island, with only the east coast being spared the effects of the eruption into the sea.

There have been new eartquakes sited to the north of the island, a couple of which have been strong enough to be felt by the population.

The population are not worried but are little affected by the uncertainty.

It is still rumbling on and the people who were evacuated and allowed back have been evacuated again.

There now seems to be several points along a ridge to the south of the island that are spewing stuff out. There were other rumblings to the north, but these seem to have reduced due to pressure being released to the south.

If you search for El Hierro eruption there are plenty of photos of what is going on on.

It is nor very spectacular, but has done a lot of damage to the tourist and fishing industries which is what the people rely on for their living.

I was half thinking of flying over to El Hierro if there was something to see besides the sea stains and there is a photo on the front of the Canarias7 showing the latest eruption producing a bubble that is a couple of stories high.

The trouble is there is an article inside about how El Golfo was formed tens of thousands of years ago when the eqivalent of a cube of side 6.5km fell into the sea.

It says there are other fault lines in the area where the people have been evacuated and that it is anticipated that this will fall into the sea sometime in the next tens of thousands of years.

The historical collapse was caused by or accompanied by seismic activity, so I think I will stay put until it stops trembling.
