Caleta is a bit of a building site at the moment. The Ayuntamiento is spending money all over the place, and so streets and areas are blocked off while streets, pavements and gardens are renovated. There is green netting up in many areas to try and hide the works.
The areas affected are the Happy Center frontage, the road from the Happy Center to the San Jorge Hotel, the streets between Cay Beach and the beach, the pedestrianised street between the Crazy Corner and the El Castillo Shopping Center, and the landscaped area betweenthe main road and the Dulce de Leche. Added to this is the demolished Frasquita Restaurant.
It also looks as if the beach renovation project might have started on a limited scale as a digger is working out on the rocks in front of the Geranios Hotel.

Yes, I read that on the Ayuntamiento de Antigua's webpage. At least they won't need the sand for another few months after the rocks have been dug out.

I don´t think they can safely dig out ALL the rock. There would be holes that people would fall in or hurt themselves on.

They did it in front of the Atlantico Center/Sheraton hotel to create the lagoons there.

Looks like the curse of Caleta beach is back. There seems to be a complete halt in the improvements and as usual the various levels of government are saying it is not their fault. To be fair the Ayuntamiento and Cabildo seem to be doing what they can to get things done.

That isn't really true. There has been some progress, but the problem seems to stem from the political system. There are four levels of government. The ayuntamiento, of which there are six on Fuerteventura, the cabildo, which covers the island, the Canary Island Governement, and the National governement. It seems to me that many of the problems stem from not having the same parties in control at the different levels, as they are busy trying to put a spanner in the works for anyone who isn't part of any coalicions that form, and the ones putting the spanner in the works also spend time trying to blame everyone else.

The street improvements are getting close to be finished. The area in front of the Happy Center is completed, as is the road between the Happy Center and the San Jorge Hotel. The new boulevard running in front of Legends to the chemists is nearly complete, with new pedestrian ramps being constructed down to the crossings.
On the other side of Caleta, Calle Savilla is just about finished, as are Calles Verol and Pitera in the Cay Beach/Castillo Playa area.

All the street lights have finally been put in on the streets where the improvements have been carried out.

The big change is on the beach, where two-thirds of it is now closed. Only the section in front of the Barcelo Beach Resort is open. Over the rest of it there are mounds of grey sand that has been extracted from the cruise ship harbour in Puerto del Rosario, shipped to Caleta, and then pumped ashore.

I can imagine that at some time in September the whole beach will be closed for a while to allow the work to be finished.

They have stopped pumping sand on to the beach. The top third of the beach is open while they continue to work on the remainder.

The latest news is that the beach in front of the Geranios Hotel will be finished off by the end of October, before work starts on the section in front of the Barcelo Hotel, which is currently open.

The new section of beach in front of the Geranios Hotel has opend this week.
The remainder of the beach is closed. It's been reported that the beach regeneration scheme will be completed by the end of February 2017.
