Blimey did not think the Penalty Spot had been around so long. Was this taken by yourself on your maiden visit Filbert?
Is it Caleta de Fuste before it became Costa Caleta or was it called something else then?

Yes it's El Castillo, before it became Caleta de Fuste.

I took a photo of a postcard that a teacher lent to us.

It was taken in 1977, just before the first development was started.

I've always been told, and read, that the beach was manmade, but it looks natural enough to me

Good point. Looks like it has the same amount of sand has it does now. Wonder who lived in those original buildings? Amazing to think that that was virtually what the area looked like when the fort was built all those years ago.

The huts were used on a seasonal basis by fishermen who were based on the other coast in the opposite season. I know this because it was in the pregon (i think that is the word), which is the opening speech for the fiestas, when it was made by someone who was a girl when Caleta (El Castillo) looked like that.

Jesus, that's pretty amazing to see, it's crazy to think that the fort has been swallowed up by the Barcelo hotel, the National Trust and that would prevent such developments being built around historical building in this country

Building regs here and in the rest of the Canary Islands is build it then say, "Oh, dear, did I need a licence?"

I'm not sure when the Barcelo was built and it probably did have a licence, but there is a law that applies to fishermen's huts and houses built by locals 80 years ago that does not apply to hotels for some strange reason.

The castle was built in the 1700's, I think, to protect against British (English) invasions.

The other structure is one of many WWII bunker built to stop the Allies from invading the islands. Some larger ones have been turned into living accommodation on other islands.

There is another one close to the Beach Villas and you can see one near the main road close to Playa Blanca. I think there were about 30 000 Spanish troops stationed here just in case the allies decided that taking Fuerteventura would help the war effort.

Yes it´s a very green Betancuria. I took the photo yesterday.

There´s even a little stream of water in the barranco which is coming down the valley from a dam which is holding back water.
