Cycle tour of Fuerteventura 22.01.2005 - 05.02.2005

22.01.05.

After a quiet flight we landed at Fuerteventura airport around 9:00 local time. We reassembled the bicycles and travelled in a southerly direction on the FV2 to Caletta de Fuste. We then rode to Nuevo Horizonte, and checked in for 2 nights in the hotel Castillo Elba. After checking in we explored the area around the hotel. The weather was sunny.

23.01.05.

Along the coast on a track of crushed rock that was steep and poorly maintained in parts to Pozo Negro. We had a lunch of Paella at the beach restaurant. Returned through the countryside. A sunny day. 21 degrees.

24.01.05.

We rode north, past Puerto del Rosario, along the east coast, towards Corralejo. Lunch, with a bottle Vino Tinto, at the beach in the vicinity of Parque de Holandes. In the evening Roland changed his wheel sprocket at Volcano Biking in Corralejo. Overnight stay in the Canary Gardens apartments

Walking along the east coast in a southerly direction, along an endless sand beach, past the gigantic Riu - hotels. Mostly, we walked barefoot through the warm sand or through the calm water. After 7 km, we bathed in the Atlantic and did a little sunbathing, before returning the same way.

Cycle tour along the coast to the west, travelling along a track, past at lovely bays to El Cotillo. We spent a while resting on the beach near the lighthouse, in one of the stone castles that are used for protection against the wind. Later we rested in another on the beach at El Cotillo. We rode back through the countryside to the hotel. Another sunny day.

In the night there was rain, but fortunately it stopped by the morning. We took a trip on the FV1, along the east coast, before branching off to the west in the direction of Oliva. We then went over Vallebron through the Valle Grande until shortly before Tindaya and over to Tefia and La Ampuyenta to Antigua. The sun did not shine, but we didn't get wet either. Overnight stay in the Hostal el Artesano.

28.01.05

The coldst morning so far, and with heavy, dark clouds in the sky! We wanted to go up up to the Mirador del Morro Velosa, but the threatening rain and the cold wind convinced us we would be better off moving as quickly as possible towards the south. Over Tiscamanita and Tuijneje on the FV 20 to the FV 2, then the FV 56 to La Lajita. Returning to the FV 2 to Costa Calma where we had a lunch of ham before travelling on to Morro Jable. We stayed in the hotel Alberto in the centre of Morro Jable.

Along a track, heading west to the lighthouse Punta de Jandia. The morning was relatively calm, but in the course of the day the wind grew stronger. Sun with changing clouds. Cofete, The wind and the constant up and down made the ride unexpectedly difficult.

A walk along the beach to the club Aldiana. A lazier day, but too cool for bathing. Sun and clouds, with a wind blowing for the entire day.

Trip back to Costa Calma. Checked in at the hotel Morasol. After that a walk on the beach of Costa Calma.

Walking on the beach, a little sunbathing and a swim in the Atlantic. The sun spent the whole day behind the clouds.

02.02.05

Spent the morning doing a circular tour to La Pared and over La Hermosas and La Lajita, then back to the hotel. After that we spent a lovely evening on the beach.

03.02.05

Spent the morning lying on the balcony (that was so nicely sheltered from the wind and sunny!) After that we returned to the Playa de Sotavento for a walk. The beach is simply irresistible.

Next to nothing?

04.02.05 Today is our last day and we must go to somewhere closer to the airport, as tomorrow we catch the 'plane. Over the FV 56 and the FV 2 to Caleta de Fuste and on to Nuevo Horizonte. Then again into the hotel Castillo Elba where our wheel pockets waited for us. In the evening we packed.

Around 7:00 o'clock off to the airport with the wheels and the rest of the baggage.
