Fuerteventura Bring Home the Points From Lanzarorote.

The report of this game in the local paper, La Provincia, was made under the headline "Luck Smiles on Fuerteventura", but it was written by a resident of Lanzrote, who probably has a soft spot for the home side.

Memo Goal Fuerteventura started to the game brightly enough and had the ball in the net before they scored the only goal of the game in the eighth minute, when the Lanzarote defence was punished by Memo when Gustavo Garcia, a former Lanzarote player, chipped a free kick from the left over the defensive wall.

A couple of needless fouls early on in the game gave a momentuntum to the referee's card waving that was to prove expensive to Fuerteventura later in the game.

To be fair to the local reporter, after Fuerteventura took the lead Lanzarote posed the bigger threat for the rest of the game and their centre forward, Yeray, was a handfull throughout the game. Anibal Zurdo, a recent signing from Benidorm, also had a promising debut for Lanzarote on the left wing.

The reason that Lanzarote failed to score was a combination of good defending in the centre of the field, at least three class saves and some fortune with crosses to unmarked players failing to pick out their target.

Throughout the game Fuerteventura always had the potential to threaten and this probably prevented Lanzarote from being able to commit more men forward.

Sending off On 62 minutes the flood of card waving resulted in Fali being sent off for a second yellow card. As usual this followed a discussion by most of those on the pitch, and he was closely followed by the coach, Juan Almeida, who protested too much for the referees liking.

After the sending off there were a couple of lengthy delays while players from the away side were treated, but if these were time wasting efforts they only resulted in seven minutes additional time. Many of the Lanzarote supporters seemed to be of the opinion that they were never going to score and headed for the exits, while the final whistle brought sighs of relief and and cheers of joy from the 100 or so visiting supporters.
