Golf is a very popular sport on Fuerteventura. The first golf course on the Island was created in Caleta de Fuste (Costa Caleta). This is a really excellent course, designed by Juan Catarineu, and which hosted the Spanish Open in 2004. Quite an achievement for a course which only opened in Spring 2002.
Despite Fuerteventura's almost constant sunshine and little rain, the golf course has beautiful greens. The winds provide a challenge for all golfers. there are three lakes and other natural hazards.
The golf course also boasts a 5 star clubhouse, the Elba Palace Golf Resort Hotel, which homes the pro shop and the resident PGA professional. It has a driving range, chipping area, practice bunker and putting green. Practice facilities include a 50 bay driving range, club and buggy hire, a large putting green and a second green for chipping and bunker shots.
This course is designed around luxurious villa complexes many of these villas being available for rental.
The second course to open was built alongside the first one in Caleta. This is very well set up as a course that is ideal for the holidaymaker type golfer, as well as experienced golfer, it being slightly less challenging than Fuerteventura Golf Course. This course is currently maintained in very good condition.
It is a par 70 course designed for Manolo Piņeiro, twice world champion golfer. The course has Amenities include a club house, pro shop, buggy, trolley and club hire, a cafeteria, restaurant and changing rooms with showers and lockers.
The course in Jandia, on the right as you enter Morro Jable, though open still has a few teething problems. The course is quite hilly and would be more suitable if the course had buggiess, but at the moment there aren't any. The paths between tees aren't clearly defined and it can be difficult to find the next tee. It is well laid out and if the teething problems can be sorted out this promises to be a good course.
In October 2008 the first nine holes of the Golf course in Las Playitas were opened. There is also a driving range, for around 30 golfers. It is a very well planned and challenging course and golfers will look forward to the opening of the final 9 holes very soon. the golf pro here is British PGA professional Murdo McCorquodale, who speaks English, Spanish and German. The Golf Course at Las Playitas Golf course is just a few moments away from Gran Tarajal.
There are plans to have a golf course just outside Corralejo, although we don't have any details at the moment.
All in all Fuerteventura is developing into an ideal destination for those who like a little golf on holiday and for those that want an entire holiday designed around that theme.
Thanks to Mr and Mrs Jones from arround Bicester for providing us with some information for this page. We met them at the Jandia Golf course and we were pleased that they were Sunnyfuerteventura.com fans.
