Traditional Canarian Music

The International Day of Tourism was held on the 8th October 2005 in the Barcelo Hotel, Caleta de Fuste, Fuerteventura. The event began with excellent music from artists dressed in traditional Canarian Costumes, singing traditional songs.

The presenters

At the event there were to be two tourism prizes awarded, and the statistical information gathered from tourists leaving from fuerteventura airport during July was to be presented to the public.

First hotel owner on Fuerteventura

One of the prizes was presented to the brothers Jose Maria y Carlos Cebris Cebria, who first came to the islands in 1970. They opened the first hotel on the island, Los Apartamentos Atlantis Los Barqueros in Corralejo, in 1982. This initial hotel has developed into the Atlantis Hotels and Resorts Chain.

Richard Ericson Guston

The other honour was given to Dr Richard Ericson Guston, 81 from Sweden, who was the islands first tourist in 1972, and has spent three months a year here ever since. As there were no "official" hotels on the island at that time, he stayed at the Hotel Fuerteventura Playa Blanca, (Parador de Tourismo) which then belonged to the Canarian Government, and currently to the Cabildo. He continues to visit that hotel.

As for the statistical information, gathered from 577 tourists in August, more than 90% were either happy, or very happy with their holiday, a slight increase over 2004. More than 90% had the intention of returning, another increase. When looking at how the tourists had decided to visit Fuerteventura, 15% had used the internet, trebling last year's number. Any difficulties the tourists reported will be used to improve the standards for the coming years.

Entertainment

Finally, there was entertainment, from these two impressionists, with sketches about David Beckham, among others.
