The campaign of cleaning and environmental consciousness raising "Queremos Ponerte Bonita" which has been developed with the coordination of the Department of Environment of the city Hall of
Fuerteventura, the Cabildo, the Government of Canaries, neighbourhood and business associations, have completed the work in Los Alares (Antigua) and Tefía (Puerto del Rosario), where they have removed around 1.300 tons of debris, old electrical appliances, and general rubbish.
In both localities the works have been going on for the last three weeks with several squads of workers (some 40 people on the whole), 2 trucks of 1.500 Kg of capacity,
a crane, a compacting machine and several pickup vans etc. The neighbours in the locality also helped by collecting the rubbish together in order that it could be collected more easily.
"In the case of Tefía the action was centred at the crossroads on the road to La Oliva, where a big pile of scrap metal and residues of construction had accumulated, creating an eyesore about which there had been complaints from tour companies with excursions through the area” stated the councillor of the Environment of the city Hall of Fuerteventura, Lázaro Cabrera.
In clearing up the pavements the action was different, "the residues in this zone were a lot more diverse, consisting mainly of the remainders of construction work, old electrical goods and trash in general. Here we have had an important contribution by the neighbours in the area, which enabled all the environment of the town, including footpaths to be cleared etc. Nevertheless, even though the pavements have been cleaned they have to continue to collect more rubbish", explained Lázaro Cabrera.
The Cabildo Fuerteventura, in collaboration with the Ayuntamiento de Puerto del Rosario, has also recently been working on the environment around Playa Blanca, where they have demolished old and uncompleted buildings in the area popularly known as “El Palomar”, in the zona de la Montaña. The cleaning will be transferred in the next few days to Nuevo Horizonte where with the collaboration of businessmen and the Ayuntamiento of Antigua will again work to improve the environment.
