Jesús de León emphasized that "the accidents with injuries has gone down by 30% during the last four years, since the creation of the “Plan de Seguridad Vial"
The “Plan de Seguridad Vial” comes from the study of accidents that takes place over each year by the Consejería de Infraestructuras y Ordenación del Territorio recording data from the accidents registered in the highways of Fuerteventura. The analysis of the data can set in motion actions of concrete improvement.
"The objective is to be able to have some data that help us to locate the accidents blackspots, so that we can improve the conditions of the road once we know the cause of the accident", reports Jesús de León, and also the plan "also permits us to evaluate the efficacy of the measures adopted in previous years".
The most significant data from this report of accidents is the reduction in the number of deaths from traffic accidents, reduced from 32 registered in 2003 to only 9 the past year, which is a reduction of 72%.
The total number of accidents with deaths and injuries occurred was reduced from 141 from 2003 to 99 in 2006, a reduction of 30% in four years.
The counsellor Jesús de León, also wanted to emphasize the importance of maintaining a "constant flow of communication between all agencies, as by combining efforts there will be more troops in the fight against what is, at present, the main cause of death of Spanish youths between 5 and 29 years, which should worry us since the majority of the population of Fuerteventura is less than 35 years". Jesús de León thanked the contribution of the Civil Guard and the Local Police, which is "indispensable in creating and carrying out this plan".
The detection of the accident blackspots through the evaluation of the data contributed to by the Civil Guard and the Local Police creates the first step of the Plan de Seguridad Vial. Technicians of the Department of Highways of the city Hall then create a report based on the data, which looks at the causes of the accident; whether the accident is down to human errors, technical failures of the vehicle or to the own road design, which is especially important as in this case the department is mobilized into adopting opportune measures to change the road layout. The results of this type of actions will be analyzed in the report of the following year.
The measures mostly adopted to try to reduce the accidents in highway are improving the layout of the roads, installing necessary road signs, altering or creating new structures such as roundabouts, improving the hard shoulders and removing hazards that hold up or stop the traffic.
