Antigua Town Hall 'strangles' the economy of families with further increases in taxes during the current economic crisis, according to Gustavo Garcia of the Canaries Coalition.

The Canaries Coalition (CC) of Antigua have publicly denounced the lack of sensitivity to the residents of the municipality's problems by the Ayuntamiento of Antigua, because they have risen the municipal taxes without taking into account the current economic crisis.

The Ayuntamiento of Antigua has not only approved an increase in taxes but has established other fees for services that until now were offered free, such as issuing certificates of residence, voter registration, technical reports, police reports of cohabitation, certification documents and the use of municipal facilities etc.

The spokesman of CC in Antigua, Gustavo Garcia, believes that “this tax burden on the neighbors is crazy in these times. There are families who cannot bear the payment of current taxes, and now have increased Real Property Tax (IBI) and the tax on motor vehicles (IVTM), amongst others to cope with."

Gustavo Garcia emphasized that the ayuntamiento also approved charging a fee for sewage, based on the consumption of domestic water, this service is free to date.

The nationalists claim that the payment of taxes will have to be made in single payment at the end of the year, October and November, "this is inconceivable. There are families who are without work and who receive no compensation whatsoever, which makes it very difficult to make ends meet, with the increase in tax payments, due at year end, "said Gustavo Garcia.
