Salt works, Morro Jable

The Cabildo and the Government of the Canaries, through the Canarian Employment service, recently finalised the restauration project for the buildings of the former salt works at the Playa del Matorral at Morro Jable. The project was developed through an agreement for the professional qualification of unemployed persons and it allowed not only the recovery of the remaining structures, including the cellars and water depository, but also the tidying up of the surrounding area to make it a more pleasant place to visit. The work was carried out under the supervision of technicians of the Department of the Environment, managed by Lázaro Cabrera and was completed over five months by a team of five workers.

Lázaro Cabrera said the restauration work was based around what remains of the former saltworks of Morro Jable, which during its years of service was used to supply the needs of the local fishing industry. The salt it produced was also used in the curing of meat and domestic products, as well as the treatment of hides. It was important for the people of Morro Jable and the surrounding area as created jobs in the fishing and cheese making industries. Currently it has a very important symbolic value for the local residents and adds to the area in terms of tourism.

Whale skeleton He also stated that coastal saltworks play an important role in the conservation of the ecosystems that include aquatic birds, and that at Morro Jable is doubly important because of its location. The work has helped maintain the environment. The improvements also promote the area as an attraction in itself, and the installation on the skeleton of a sperm whale in the area will provide an additional interesting feature.
