24 hour Kayak event, piraguismo on Fuerteventura.

The first 24 hour canoeing competition, (piraguismo) in the Canaries, took place on the 28th and 29th January, 2006.

The event was a great sucesss with 10 teams, each with four people attempting to do as many laps as possible in 24 hours.

This was a new competition, designed to promote nautical sports, and was organised by the canoeing club, Piraguamar in colaboration with la Consejería de Deportes del Cabildo de Fuerteventura and the Ayuntamiento of Puerto del Rosario.It is hoped that it will become an annual event.

During their resting hours entrants slept in their cars, in a local hotel, or if they lived close enough, had a couple of hours in their own beds.

The laps took about 11 minutes, during changeovers a baton was passed to the next participant in the team. The winning team, team seven, completed 116 laps in the 24 hours.
