This year we knew one place that we could get something to eat was the Chinese restaurant, Buen Gusta. As usual the rest of Puerto del Rosario seemed to have shut down for the evening, but as we knew everyone would turn out just before midnight we weren't surprised by how quiet it was in the capital of Fuerteventura .
Mr and Mrs O'Toole were first time visitors to these celebrations and it took them a while to find the restaurant. Having enjoyed a meal we set off to the square in front of the church. The Cabildo building was lit up by a cascade of lights hanging from the edge of the roof and someone had aimed a spotlight at the clock on the church tower, which gave the pigeons and indication that it wasn't a normal night.
As the clock began to strike twelve those present began to eat the grapes that had been provided. Very considerately these were small grapes with very few pips, which helped as the aim of eating them is to do so before the clock finished striking twelve.
Once this was done everyone congratulated each other on seeing the new year in, and the fireworks commenced. When they finally quietened down (they don't finish until about 8 in the morning) several large groups had their photographs taken on the steps of the building opposite the church.
After that it was up to the Plaza de la Paz for the musical entertainment. It was noticeable that there were fewer people around than in previous years, and it was suggested by one of the locals that this was as a result of the introduction of the point system for driving licences.
The group came on at about 12.30 and promised to play until five in the morning, and probably did, but we weren't there to witness the end of the festivities.
