The director general for the promotion of tourism of the Government of the Canaries visited Fuerteventura recently to see the work in progress to increase and improve the beach at Playa Blanca, due to be completed in early April this year.
On Friday the 12th January 2007, a full group of representatives of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, the Government of the Canaries and representatives of the ayuntamiento of Puerto del Rosario visited and presented to the media a report on the state of the works in progress. The development of Playa Blanca is part of the Plan de Infraestructuras Turísticas de Fuerteventura, thought to be "a most important improvement to the quality of life for citizens of Fuerteventura", according to the President of the Cabildo, Mario Cabrera.
Attending along with the President of the Cabildo were Lázaro Cabrera, counsellor of the Environment, Olivia Estévez, counsellor for Tourism, Marcial Morales, mayoress of Puerto del Rosario, and Raimundo Domínguez, Director General of the Promosion of Tourism for the Government of the Canaries.
of the budget of €300,000 which was jointly financed by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura and the Gobierno Autónomo.
The “Proyecto de Embellecimiento de Acceso a Playas y Corredor Viario del Centro (Embellecimiento, naturalización y acceso a Playa Blanca)”, will take four months to complete before we can see the final result, which will double the usable area of the beach, "notably improving the leisure facilities of a capital that will be closer to this beach once the application for the permit to bring the maritime path to the beach has been resolved." said Mario Cabrera.
Olivia Estévez, counsellor for Tourism, declared to those present that "this is not only a resource for the 50% of the islands population that lives in the capital but also for the hudreds of thousands of tourists that visit Fuerteventura".
Raimundo Domínguez, commented on the importance of this project to the development the route from the north to the south of Fuerteventura, and to "the cleaning, embellishment, landscaping, of the land adjacent to the roads and the roundabouts along the length of the island", and also stated his satisfactin with the future results of an "investment that provides the Majoreran population of Fuerteventura an important a sevice in a city such as a local beach."
The beach itself is already popular, not only with the inhabitants of the nearby capital, but also with several surf schools on the island as the waves that are often to be found at Playa Blanca are ideal for learning the basics of how to surf in a supervised environment.
The dunes that are being removed, developed after a wall that runs parallel to the sea was built, which was at the same time as the Parador hotel was constructed in 1969. In this time the dunes have become home to various plants and animals and provide a feeding ground for birds such as this Kestrel observing with interest the work from the top of a lamp post as its larder was being removed. The work on the beach will also mean that the two beach bars that are behind the dunes at the moment will be moved further back.
