Increase in Tourism again for Fuerteventura.

Fuerteventura achieved a 7% increase in tourism over the numbers arriving in 2006.

During 2007 Fuerteventura achieved an increase of 7% more tourists visiting the island than in 2006, the only island in the archipelago to achieve this. The sectors with a greater increase were domestic tourism and those arriving in cruise ships, which achieved an 18% growth.

The board of tourism undertake a study each year of visitors arriving in Fuerteventura, via the airport and via cruise ships. This last year (2007) 1,777,482 tourists visited the island, (1,658,786 in 2006), which means an increase of more than 110,000 tourists over the previous year.

Of the international arrivals striking increases in numbers of tourists from Ireland were noted, thanks to the expansion of the frequency of flights, where 50% more tourists arrived than in 2006. Thus, Ireland now lies, with 61,765 passengers, in fourth place, with only Germany, Great Britain and Italy, (which grew by almost 10%) contributing more. It should also be noted that there has been an increase of 76% of tourists from France, which reached 32,888 passengers last year.

The Minister of Tourism of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Águeda Montelongo said “I think we have these results due to the effort to promote the island in the domestic market in collaboration with various entrepreneurs, and also with the coming into operation of new connections from low-cost companies, whilst she appreciated the efforts of all the other companies, as they all continue to encourage tourists to Fuerteventura by opening new lines and expanding the frequency of existing ones, which impacts very positively on the figures produced”

The data does not include those tourists that come via the ferries or private boats.
