Jazz Festival

As part of the Canary Islands Jazz Festival 2005, there will be a session by George Duke and his Jazz group on July 1st at 21.00 hours in the Auditorio de Puerto del Rosario. Tickets are free and can be obtained from Cultura del Cabildo de Fuerteventura y del Centro de Arte juan Ismael.

We sent an email to the Professional Windsurfers Association and received the following as part of the reply. After asking around further we were told that there was still and event on but it won't be quite as large, the dates may change too. We will keep you informed.

Fuerteventura - Cancelled

Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond the control of both the PWA and the Organizers, the 2005 Fuerteventura PWA Grand Slam has had to be postponed until 2006. The Gorriones Hotel has been temporarily closed for essential repairs and this has in turn, created a knock on effect on local businesses that coexist with the hotel. The resulting situation has forced the Organizers to take the decision to cancel the event for this year.

This is the first time in over 20 years that there has not been a World Tour event at Sotavento, but it will only be a temporary break. The event will be back in 2006 and we expect it to be bigger and better than ever.

This is disappointing news for us as we were looking forward to having the opportunity to take some excellent photographs.

At least one person was looking for information about summer bonfires on Fuerteventura today. The fires that could be seen last night were part of the San Juan feast day that is held every year on the 24th of June. It seems to be an important festival throughout Spain. An event was held at Pozo Negro, and this involved something akin to a baptism ritual. San Juan is St John the Baptist. In El Mattoral the fiesta extends to Saturday, with dancing in the square most nights. On Saturday the party will really get going at 11.30 pm.

There is a plan to create a gigantic chamber within mount Tindaya. The chamber will have shafts created that are aligned with particular positions of the Sun, allowing light to flood into the chamber. This piece of art has been designed by Eduardo Chillida.

This may sound incredible, but surveys have been carried out to assess the feasibilty of the project. The survey involved drilling 14 holes 10cm in diameter into the mountain. The holes were about 100 metres in length and the total distance drilled was about 1700m.

New Caleta bus stop, Fuerteventura When you get the bus into Caleta either from the airport or from Puerto del Rosario, you will get off the bus at a new bus stop which is situated on the small roundabout between Caleta and Chipmunk Mountain. It used to be a concern for people that they might miss their stop, you can't miss this one though, its bright red and the bus approaches it very slowly.

There has been an outbreak of development in Corralejo. The square where the tourist information office was is being developed. The photo on the left is looking across the square to where the tourist office was. The one on the right shows the hole for the sunken bandstand. The tourist office has moved to the old harbour, next to the stautue of the woman looking out to sea.

The lack of news in the last couple of weeks is due to the news editor taking a break back to England to watch the play off finals.
