Sports fair, Feria Del Deporte 2006, Pozo Negro

From the 15- 18th of June Fuerteventura held its first sports fair. The event took place at the showground at Pozo Negro, which is also used for the feaga.

There was the opportunity to try out, free and under guidance, just about any sport you could imagine. Darts, fencing, horse riding, rock climbing, bungee jumping as well as a selection of traditional Canarian sports such as Lucha (canarian wrestling) Juego del Palo (staff fighting) and Salto del Pastor (sliding down a pole) used to get downhill quickly and safely.

Ice skating Bungee jumping

The two highlights of the event were the bungee jumping, bravely attempted by Johnny B from Queue FM radio, which is always very exciting for participants and spectators, and the ice skating rink. There was quite a large rink specially erected for the event, and people were allowed on the rink a few dozen at a time. For the locals, this was probably the first time they had ever seen ice not destined for the bottom of a glass and to begin with most held on to the edge of the rink. Insturctors were available though to show people how to do it and many were soon off skating (relatively) safely, round the rink.

The event was very well attended, the mornings on the first two days were solely for school children to take part in the sports. At 12 mid day on the Sunday there were horse races, which are good to watch. These were held to the left of the track leading from the car park to the public entrance.
