Ryanair has recently announced it’s fourth connection to Fuerteventura as it begins to take bookings from Shannon airport in Ireland. Dublin and Gerona currently operate three flights a week and Düsseldorf, in Germany, has four weekly connections.
In the six first months of operation the connections with Dublin and Gerona have brought about 30,000 travellers onto Fuerteventura, while the connection with Düsseldorf alone has brought in 60,000 more travellers this year, and with the new connection with Shannon should take to us to 100,000 passengers by the end of 2007.
These developments are very beneficial to the Island as these travellers do not travel as a package deal but book directly their accommodation, transport, car rental, excursions and meals, which brings very important benefits to the small and medium sized businesses of the island.
"The challenge is in knowing how to take advantage of this; designing products specifically for these tourists and adapting too meet their demands. The positive effects of the evolution of the market has already been seen in Caleta de Fuste, and throughout the rest of tourist centres of the island", the president of the Cabildo Mario Cabrera explained, whilst reminding people that Fuerteventura has been working for some time to promote the island to low cost flight companies.
The low cost flights are especially important as they also allow Fuerteventura to connect via those airports to more than 100 destinations all over Europe and with the coming of the ferry to Tarfaya this will also allow passengers wishing to travel to Africa a low cost alternative.
