The Cabilo Acquires Six New Guaguas for the Island´s Passenger Service.

The Department of Transport and Communication of the Cabildo, under the direction of Pilar Rodríguez, presented six new buses acquired for the renovation and amplification of the fleet. The presentation took place in Gran Tarajal and the president of the Cabildo, Mario Cabrera, attended along with representives of the different municipalities and the company that runs the service.

The vehicles signified an investment of about 1.2 million euros. Four of the buses were 12m in length and have a capacity of 55 seated passengers and the other two are 15 metres in length and can carry 71 passengers. The new buses allow an improvement of the island´s fleet, especially the lines that connect Morro Jable with Puerto del Rosario, and an increase in the frequency of services to El Cotillo.

The president of the Cabildo explained that "the investment that has been made by the Cabildo has permitted a substantial improvement in the service with more and better vehicles, an we wish to complement it with the new bus station in Puerto del Rosario and the improvements that will happen to the most important stops once the work at the station is finalised."

For his part, the Counsellor for Transport said that "more new buses will be added by the end of this year, as a result of the foreseeable program of development, thanks to the participation of the state government, the government of the Canaries and the Cabildo."

The new contract, the draft of which is being worked on at the moment, has an approximate budget of 3.5 million euros finaced by the three administrations and will allow investment for a further increase in the fleet and improvements to bus shelters.

The Transporte Insular de Viajeros (TIV) carries about 1.8 million passengers per yearcovering about 2.7 million kilometers along the roads of Fuerteventura.
