Subsidies for Rural Electrification Works and Renewable Energy Installation Announced by the Cabildo.

The Ministry of Industry and New Technologies directed by Andrés Valerón, have opened the annual period for applicationsfor subsidies for rural electrification and renewable energy works. The official announcement states that grants of between 235 euros and 2 500 euros will be available per dwelling for rural electrification with a maximum of 3 700 euros for renewable energy. In both cases the limit of the grant is 50% of the cost of the installation. Interested persons have up to 31st March to place there requests with the Cabildo.

The Cabilo Acquires Six New Guaguas for the Island´s Passenger Service.

The Department of Transport and Communication of the Cabildo, under the direction of Pilar Rodríguez, presented six new buses acquired for the renovation and amplification of the fleet. The presentation took place in Gran Tarajal and the president of the Cabildo, Mario Cabrera, attended along with representives of the different municipalities and the company that runs the service.

Department of the Environment Control the Harvesting of "Criadas".

The Minister for the Department of the Environment, Lázaro Cabrera, has dictated a resolution to regulate the harvesting of criadas, a type of truffle, in National Parks and Nature Reserves. "There is an important tradition on Fuerteventura around the harvesting of these mushrooms, (Terfezia claveryi) but due to the number of people pursuing the activity it is necessary to establish criteria for their collection, otherwise there could be serious damage to the environment, since there are many people who go into the countryside to collect them without really knowing about the correct way to collect them", explained Lázaro Cabrera.

LÁZARO CABRERA Demands Action from the Government to prevent the spread of Bird Flu from Mauritania.

The Minister for the Environment has raised the alert over the possible detection of a source of bird 'flu in the coastal areas of Mauritania and the possibility of it being carried by the birds as the migrate to the north of Europe. On their migatory flights the birds would only be a matter of hours from Fuerteventura. Lázaro Cabrera said he was most surprised by the failure of international coordination and that up to mow the Cabildo had not received even a telephone call on the matter, having to rely on calls from individuals in Maritania and the press of that country, who have already been informed.
