New offices for the Department of Security and Emergencies

Mario Cabrera and Lázaro Cabrera visit these new offices of Seguridad y Emergencias, in which the Cabildo have invested 300 000 euros.

New offices, Security and Emergencies The president of the Cabildo, Mario Cabrera, the councillor for the Department of the Environment, Lázaro Cabrera, and the Mayor of Puerto del Rosario, Marcial Morales, today visited the new offices for the Department of Security and Emergencies that within a month will be handed over to the department, and according to Mario Cabrera, “will be fully operational before the end of 2007” .

The reformations, which have been carried out while respecting the architecture of the building that formerly housed the offices of the old Los Estancos Airport, consisted of he has consisted of the restoration of the roofs, rendering, exterior and interior walls and in the installation of a new floor, in a project that has had a global investment of 300 000 euro.

This project also includes the adaptation of a room as the coordination centre for the Centro Insular de Coordinación de Seguridad y Emergencias, and the installation of the technological and communication equipment will be put out to contract this week with a budget of 315 000 euro. This facility will include the office of the director and five telephone operators as well as a specialist in each of the areas of Health, Emergencies and Security, which will mean that Fuerteventura’s ambulance, fire and local police services will be coordinated 24 hours a day.

The setting in motion of this project "will mean that the management of the resources in Fuerteventura will be carried out from the Insular Centre of Coordination by personnel from the island, that will activate the most suitable service to each situation from the point closest to the event, so that the emergency services are able to attend in the least time possible", explained, Mario Cabrera, who said also that this centre "will enable the operation of a service that up to now has not been the most adequate, since at present the response to 112 (emergency) calls is carried out from Gran Canaria, where the re is neither the knowledge of the resources or of the locations on Fuerteventura that logically if we have here".

Lázaro Cabrera, declared that "with the coming of the Insular Center of Coordination, a project that was considered a principle part in the Insular Plan of Security and Emergencies will come to fruition, so that we can comply the commitment made to the citizens to improve the reaction times of all our resources, so that they are able to be anywhere on the Island in 10 to 12 minutes".

The councillor also stated that this project is a credit to the Cabildo, which has "endowed the different local police forces, firemen and civil protection with the equipment and the necessary vehicles for the performance of their functions". In this sense, he emphasized that an important feature "has been and will be the coordination with the six Ayuntamientos".

Marcial Morales said, "this centre meets one of the old aspirations of the Cabildo, so that the municipal resources be coordinated from a single point, in a way that is going to improve the Island’s emergency service". The technician responsible for Security and Emergencies department of the Cabildo, Fran Torres, recalled previous situations in which the management of the service centralized of Las Palmas was not the most adequate one, and that with the start of the operation of the new service "this should not occur again".
