The Director General of Fred Olsen Ferries, Guillermo Van de Waal has confirmed to te President of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Mario Cabrera, that his company has made a formal request to the Port Authorities of Las Palmas and the Port Services of the Canaries Government for a permit to commence a service between the ports of Morro Jable and Las Palmas once the work to improve the infrastructure that the Government of the Canaries is carrying out has been completed. The service will be carried out using a fast-ferry craft of the type that the company already uses in the Canaries, and will allow several crossings per day.
Mario Cabrera considers that the confirmation of the entry to service of this new line “will signify a leap forward in the quality of services forr the transport of vehicles and people and will enable the closing of the ring of fast ferry services that connect the islands. This already includes Corralejo to Playa Blanca, and between Gran Canaria , Tenerife and the rest of the islands, and only needs the proposed link between Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria to complete this maritime link of high speed services.
The President of the Cabildo explained that the information received “is that Fred Olsen will commence the operation with several connections a day, but it is also very important that they have committed themselves to providing a sleeper service in Morro Jable, that is to say that first thing in the morning we will have a connection with Las Palmas, which signifies a very important improvement. Then there will be two more connections per day for passengers and vehicles.
Mario Cabrera explained that therer was no confirmed date for the start of the service, “although the Canaries Government has committed almost 5 million euros and work to increase the operating capacity at Morro Jable including a quay with ramps that would allow the service to operate is being carried out with some urgency. Meanwhile Fred Olsen have asked for facilities in the port that will allow them to carry out the sale of tickets and administrative tasks.
