The Town Hall Finalizes The Installation Of Traffic Lights To Control Speed

The last of the sets of lights recently installed in Fuerteventura entered operation this week in Tiscamanita.

Traffic Lights To Control Speed The consejero de Infraestructuras y Ordenación del Territorio del Cabildo de Fuerteventura, Jesús de León was recently in Tiscamanita, accompanied of the mayor of Tuineje, Gonzalo Báez, to oversee the completion of last of the seven systems installed in Fuerteventura to control traffic speed. These have been set up in six localities, Villaverde, Morro Jable, Casillas del Ángel, Antigua and Tuineje, Tiscamanita being the final installation.

The reason that the Department of Highways consejero Jesús de León instigated the installation of these traffic control measures is to “safeguard the security of the citizens who live in those localities by trying to reduce the speed of the vehicles which circulate around the towns and villages and to reduce the danger from traffic in urban areas”, explained Jesús de León. This initiative has cost the Corporación Insular a total investment of 200,000 euros.

The system of speed control begins 150 meters from the traffic lights, where a sensor installed in the asphalt detects the speed of each vehicle approaching the lights. A second sensor, located at 50 meters, measures the speed 100 meters later to calculate if the reduction of the speed of the vehicle is sufficient, in which case the amber traffic light will give priority to the vehicle, however if the speed of the vehicle is too fast then the light stop the vehicle. There is also a button to allow the lights to change to allow pedestrians to cross safely.
