Caleta market has moved to a new location just up Montecastillo, or Chipmunk Mountain as its called. Don't worry its not really a mountain, but it is a hill and if you are disinclined to walk up you can easily take the mini train and maybe walk back. It is only a short walk and not a steep hill however.
Locals are not too sure why the market has been moved. Some say that it is because of the repairing of the road and pavements in that part of Caleta where the market used to be held.
There is also speculation as to how long the market will be held there; anything between four months and five years I have been told. There doesn't seem to have been much consultation or discussion with stallholders.
Stall holders also have mixed feelings about the move. On the good side there is much more room for a variety of stalls and space to spread out and have more items on each stall.
On the negative side it is not as easily accessible to tourists who have to make more of an effort to visit now. Also, as the market was laid out before those visiting went up one side of the market and back down the other side making each stall equally visible. Now there is less of a route and tourists can come in and go out in several access points so some may not see all there is to offer.
Anyway you can find the location of the market on our Caleta Maps page and it is well worth a visit on Saturday mornings before 1pm when it starts to close down!
