The collaboration between the Government of the Canary Islands, the city of Puerto del Rosario and the Fuerteventura council, will allow the execution of the work of the Archaeological Museum of Fuerteventura, located in the place of the old lime kilns of El Charco.
The investment amounts to 4,199,000 euros, and the project is currently under technical supervision with the anticipation of getting a contract, in a matter of several weeks. The deadline for completion will be December 2010. The Canary Islands Government, through the Ministry of Education and Culture, contributes 70% of the budget, while the Town assumes the direction of the work and 30% of the investment, while the Municipality of Puerto del Rosario brings the site of some 3,000 m2 to the project.
The President of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, Mario Cabrera participated this morning in the presentation of the project accompanied by the mayor of Puerto del Rosario, Marcial Morales, the Minister of Education and Culture of the Canary Islands Government, Milagros Luis, CEO of the Heritage Aránzazu Gutierrez, editor and architect of the project, Miguel Cabrera.
"The building will be raised with an open character to the sea, and integrating the lime kilns through some windows, and walkways that resemble entries, which had to haul the limestone to the kilns," said Miguel Cabrera. In total 5900 m2 will be built, distributed over three floors and basement. "The design has sought above all flexibility to adapt to different surfaces and different exposures demands, according to each circumstance," explained the architect.
"The Archaeological Museum of the island is a mandate of the Law of Historical Heritage of the Canary Islands. Fuerteventura has fulfilled this function until now in Betancuria, but obviously a very modest and limited way.
