Tania Pérez, is almost back to full health after receiving a successful kidney transplant on September 6th, after seven months of having to travel to Las Palmas three times a week for dialysis to keep her alive.
The little girl had two of her dreams come true when she met and had photographs taken with her idol, David Bustamante, a popular Spanish singer, who performed a concert at Gran Tarajal. Some time later she got her second wish when she was given the news that a kidney available for her.
Although the transplant means that Tania will not have to travel to Las Palmas three times a week for dialysis the family feels sad as the new kidney came about because of the death of a young boy from a respiratory illness. The family expressed how grateful they were that his mother allowed the transplant which saved Tania and another little girl from Tenerife.
This is the second transplant that Tania has had, the first was a kidney from her mother, which her body rejected five years after the transplant.
A Kidney Dialysis (Nefrología) unit has now been set up on Fuerteventura, so exhausting trips to Las Palmas for those with kidney disorders is a thing of the past.
