Coastal flooding on Fuerteventura.

An unusual combination of high tides due to the Harvest Moon, the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox, and high winds from a slightly more easterly direction than usual caused low level flooding along much of the eastern coast of Fuerteventura.

The photographs show the waters that had breached the sea defenses in the area close to the Atlantico shopping centre, Caleta de Fuste. The beaches are sometimes covered when there is a high tide, but the water does not usually make it to the pathways, or cause the umberellas that provide the shade for sunlovers to fall over.

In Gran Tarajal, the combination of winds and tide caused the beach to be washed up onto the promenade, and this was bad enough to interest the local tv and press media. In Morro Jable, tourists and locals were treated to the spectacle of waves crashing over the wall that seperates the restaurants and the sea front part of the old town from the sea.

Flooding in Fuerteventura The flooding seemed to cause no serious damage, but one holiday maker had trouble getting back from the Chiringuito restaurant in Caleta de Fuste, which is on a man made island with a walkway out to it from the beach, for fear of getting drenched by the waves. This was very entertaining for those watching and he said he had had an enyoyable ten minutes.

Mrs O'Connor, a tourist from Dublin was amazed at the state of the sea, and said she had just been telling somoene how lovely the beaches in this part of Caleta were. Caleta beach was back to normal this morning but the umberellas have yet to be replanted.
