Improvements to Puerto del Rosario harbour

The port and sea front in Puerto Del Rosario are in the process of being transformed as part of an ambitious plan to improve the area in the interest of attracting more tourists to the islands capital, as well as improving the environment in the area of the new Palacio de Formations y Congresos at Loz Pozos.

The main development is the port is the creation of a quay that will allow larger cruise ships to dock within the harbour. For this to be achieved the port had to be deepened and this has been done by dredging the sand from the part of the harbour where a quay designed to accommodate the cruisers is to be created.

This quay will be an extension of the existing quay used by the fishermen of the port and will be 300m long. It is being created by placing eight floating sections, the first of which has been positioned, with the hope that all eight will be in place by the end of the year.

The sand that has been dredged from an area of 100 000 square metres will be used in improving the Playa de Hornos, which is known locally as the Playa de Pozos. To prevent the sand being washed away a protective spit has been built. The beach suffered from poor water conditions due to waste from a pumping station that was located in the area, and the creation of the spit has allowed this problem to be rectified by improving the pipe work and relocating the station.

A chemical plant that was located in the area has been decommissioned and at the moment it is being demolished. This will not only improve the view the seafront but will allow a clear view from the port of the Palacio de Formations y Congresos, a new Government building that is approaching completion.

This building will house various government offices as well as being the new centre for the islands music and arts schools. There will be class rooms dedicated to different aspects of music and the arts, including classrooms for individual and group musical instrument practice, with an auditorium built to high standards of acoustic design.

The engineer responsible for the acoustics within the Palacio, Higini Aura recently visited the works to supervise the progress and while he was there he explained the acoustic engineering aspects of the work that was being done.

The final touch to all this development work will be to complete a promenade between the port and Playa Blanca. Some sections of this part of the project have been completed, while others are awaiting the clearance of the areas through which it will pass.
