Once again this year the festival incorporates the sounds of Fuerteventura into its line up.
The island of Fuerteventura will be well represented in the XIIª edition of WOMAD Canaries, that takes place between the 10th to the 12th of November in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, thanks to the participation of the sextet Cinco en Clave. The melodies and the rich influences of Cuba are evident in the repertoire of this group.
Besides the group from Fuerteventura artists from the other islands include the Agrupación Folclórica de Sabinosa (El Hierro), and the Gran Canarian bassist Charlie Moreno and the Tenerifian trio Tamgo.
Comprising Guillermo Rodriguez Galván David de León Hernández , Miguel Ferrera Hernández, Angel Trujillo Trujillo, Miguel Angel Moliner Ruiz, and Rafael Melián Martínez, the sextet Cinco en Clave was formed two years ago to recreate the sounds of Cuba. With a musical base of string instruments and percussion, they interpret guaracha sounds, congas and boleros that carry the signatures of illustrious Cuban musicians, such as the legendary Miguel Arrogant, Ñico Saquito, Reinaldo Hierrezuelo and Armando Machado, among others.
Since its first edition in 1993, WOMAD Canaries has always made room for the artists and the music of the Archipelago, giving special prominence to folk tradition. Previous editions have included the artists, Los Gofiones, Los Buches, Los Campesinos, Malpaís de la Corona, El Tostón, Parranda El Cerrillal, Mestisay, Troveros de Asieta, Benito Cabrera, José Antonio Ramos, Amolán o Domingo Rodríguez “El Colorao”, besides othe pop and rock bands like Los Coquillos, Link o Prana.
