A number of swimmers left Corralejo harbour last Sunday, 14th October for the annual event to swim the 3400 metres of sea from the island of Lobos to Corralejo beach in Fuerteventura.
Anyone aged between 16 and 70 could take part in the race and 175 contestants entered not only from Fuerteventura but from other European countries. The swimmers each had a chip in their leg to help identify who they were and their race times, the record for the crossing being 32.31 minutes, this was set by Cristian Heinin 2004. Fastest female was Angela Maurer, 40:10 minutes, set in 2005, female and Jesus Collado in 41.11 minutes set the record for paralympic in 2006.
The beach in Corralejo was crowded with cheering supporters, Spanish music was being played and a commentator fed facts about the race. The experience was one of a kind and we all felt the relief that the contestants showed on their faces as they reached the beach safely. There were even two contestants who swam as a team holding a rope between them.
Overall it was another interesting event for Fuerteventura that bought locals and tourists together.
