Fishing boat sinks in El Cotillo, Fuerteventura

The Ayuntamiento of La Oliva wants to publicly appreciate the help received when citizens collaborated in the rescue of the crew of a sunken Fishing boat in El Cotillo last Friday.

On Friday, the 7th the town of El Cotillo became shocked when a fishing boat sank with four locals on board. After many hours of worry, and lots of collaboration between those in the neighbourhood of El Cotillo, all those who had been on board the boat were safely reunited with relatives and friends.

Although the distance between the shipwreck and the coast was considerable, two of the crew swam to El Cotillo by their own means. The other two, in spite of their long disappearance were rescued in a good state of health.

The accident happened during the night, however people came to help with the rescue and several small boats assisted in the search and rescue of the two people still missing.

Local sailors know better than anybody, the risks that the sailing involves, because many sailing families have had experiences with tragic consequences. Once again, the fishermen and sailors have returned to demonstrate the high degree of solidarity between those who work the sea.

The ayuntamiento of La Oliva wishes to publicly thank everyone involved including the Civil Defence, Civil Guard, Local Police, rescue teams and marine rescue, who with boats and helicopter, acted with diligence and great professionalism to avoid a human tragedy off the coast, and wished for a speedy recovery, for all those involved. Especially, the ayuntamiento want to express thanks for the safe delivery of the sailors of El Cotillo.
