Queen Sofia attends the release of 22 loggerhead turtle hatchlings on the beach in Nuevo Horizonte

Her Majesty was visiting the natural parks of Jandia, Corralejo and Isla de Lobos, two major core areas integrated into the Biosphere Reserve of Fuerteventura.

Her Majesty Queen Sofia saw the release of 22 baby loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) as part of the proposed plan of reintroduction of this species in Fuerteventura This was the first visit of Her Majesty to the municipality of Pájara .

 
Her Majesty's helicopter landed on the beach which is part of the Natural Park of Jandia, after opening a new centre on the of Isla de Lobos. Queen Sofia was accompanied on the journey from Corralejo by President of the Canarian Government, Paulino Rivero, Secretary of State Water and Rural Environment, Josep Puches, who represented the Ministry of Environment and Rural Areas, and the president of the Cabildo, Mario Cabrera. Also attended the event delegate in the Canary Islands Government, Carolina Darias.

 

Her Majesty the Queen attended this event in response to an invitation made by the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, with the intention of Determining the major projects currently being developed in Fuerteventura in connection with the environment.

 

These include the opening of the Interpretation Center of Isla de Lobos and the reintroduction project of the Turtle "Boba", Which took place both in the morning, but also other initiatives for the island's future as the development of the proposed Arid National Park, Fuerteventura , and the recent declaration of the island by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve.

 

About a hundred people, among Whom were the Minister of the Environment of the Cabildo, Natalia Evora Pájara City Council representatives, technicians and Turtle Project volunteers, neighbors and employers of the town, and several tourists who were in the area, came to greet Her Majesty the Queen.

 

Queen Sofia was very interested in knowing the facilities of Camp Tortuga, and asked about where and how to perform the tasks of monitoring about 800 turtle eggs that rest at the moment under the sand, in a closed area of the Cofete beach waiting to hatch, Which is expected to occur within the next two weeks, and in knowing more about the work needed to carry out the reintroduction of this species in Fuerteventura.

 

Her Majesty spent enough time to participate in the release of turtle hatchlings , all of between 1 and 3 years, born in Cofete previous experiences of the project, and who knew the sea today for the first time.

 

Also participating in the loose Paulino Rivero, Mario Cabrera, Natalia Evora Turtle Project volunteers and members of the Association of Disabled Adisfuer Fuerteventura, who have Actively Participate in this fourth year of the project work in the care of offspring in the Nursery Turtle from Morro Jable .
