Work begins on the new wind farm in Corralejo, to power desalination plant

It should produce twice the power, that the desalination plant needs.

The preliminary work on the wind farm in Corralejo, whose final site may generate twice as much energy than is required by the desalination plant itself, has now begun. All works and installation will be completed by the end of this year, when the turbines will enter into service.

The Water Supply Consortium to Fuerteventura (CAFF) is behind this project, with an investment of over two million euros. They have started building the foundations of the tower, on which the wind turbines will be installed, with anemometers attached.

CAAF and president of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, Mario Cabrera, and the insular executive of Water and Waste, Manuel Miranda, on Friday visited the progress of work. "This wind farm generate profits that will help optimize production costs and maintain the policy assumed by the CAAF and the council not to increase water rates, Cabrera says

The wind farm Corralejo desalination plant will have two next-generation wind turbines installed by the company Drace, with capacity to produce each 850 kilowatt per hour, which is almost double the consumption of the desalination plant.

The installation of wind turbines should be completed during the month of September, taking into account all the environmental concerns, including integration and visual aesthetics of the windmills with surrounding colours.
