With its warm, dry climate, varying terrain and surfaces, Fuerteventura can offer runners a wide range of running experiences, whether you are a lifetime addict or fancy an occasional jog.
Our resident runner John Polley, who lives on the Cocosol complex, See apartment rental, is currently in training for the Great North Run.
He welcomes enquiries from anyone who is planning a trip to the island and would like some pointers on where to go for that unique workout. Alternatively, if you are staying on the complex or nearby, he can show you his own range of training sessions.
For those more challenging runs, John has a number of recommendations. Hill repetitions on Montagna Blanca give even the most hardened career runner a solid workout and once you have finished your last repetition, you can stop to take in the view over the golf course and beyond before your descent.
Speed repeats on the nearby "locals" beach of Playa Blanca offer a more sympathetic surface to work those legs and lungs! Once again you can always reward yourself. This time with a well earned breakfast on the beach while you "warm down" in the sun.
Tempo runs on the dirt tracks at the back of Fuerteventura airport are certainly a different holiday experience. With the sea on one side and aeroplanes landing on the other there is always something to look at whilst you cover a few kilometres. While John insists he can outrun a 737, he has yet to prove it!!!
But its not all about working hard. This is Fuerteventura, where taking it easy is the number one priority. For a more gentle running experience, the options are endless. John has a number of regular routes in addition to those above.
When asked what he liked best about running on the island, he had this to say: "It's difficult to condense into a few words. I suppose my two favourite things are the weather (it hardly ever rains, it doesn't get freezing cold and you get proper daylight all day, all year round) and the numerous dirt tracks and unmade roads. In short a fantastic climate and plenty of off road tracks to explore new parts of the island that most people never see, even if they live here."
Further afield, there are a never ending supply of breathtaking experiences, in every sense of the word. The beach at Costa Calma offers kilometre after kilometre of flat compact golden sands, with an aquamarine ocean on one side and rocky cliffs and sand dunes on the other. A short drive will take you to any number of rocky hills and mountains, all with their own unique views and challenges. Every resort has its own set of beaches, hills, dirt tracks and curiosities to uncover.
If you want to know more contact John through our usual email address. Or better still, come out to the island and enjoy the running.
