If the seaside becomes a little tiring, a day out touring the island will provide a refreshing change.
This tour begings at Caleta and then takes in Antigua, Tuineje, Pájara, Betencuria and Los Molinos before returning to Caleta via Antigua.
When leaving Caleta for Antigua head for Puerto del Rosario. After a couple of minutes you will reach a roundabout. The road to Antigua, which is relatively new and not on some maps, is clearly signposted.
The village of Antigua is the centre of the municipality of Antigua, which came into being in 1812. The chapel, which is dedicated to the Virgen de Antigua, is at the centre of the village. After visiting the chapel you may wish to have lunch in one of the village's restaurants. On this trip make sure the dedicated driver doesn't have a drink.
For the next part of the tour, head south towards Tiscaminata and Tuineje. On reaching Tuineje, we turned right and headed for Pájara. We stopped here for a wander around. The main part of the town is a little after the roundabout with the goat statue. A small public garden is next to the roundabout and has an interesting gear mechanism on show.
When you leave Pájara follow the signs for Betancuria. It now becomes clear why the driver should be teetotal.
The views from the narrow, winding road are some of the best the island has to offer. The benefit of driving from south to north is that you are on the side of the road furthest from the drop.
On the way to Betancuria there are several viewpoints and you pass through the village of Vega de Rio Palmas.
Betancuria itself has several interesting places to visit, so it is possible to spend a couple of interesting hours here.
When you leave Betancuria you climb out of the village, and towards the top of the hill there are viewpoints on both sides of the road. The one on the left of the road looks north and that on the right provides a good view of Betancuria.
When you go down the other side of the hill, there is a roundabout and you need to follow the signs for Valle de Santa Ines. Your next turn is left towards Tefia. About 3 kilometers after your turn there is another left turn signposted to Los Molinos. Follow this road down to the parking place.
An interesting feature at Los Molinos is the duck pond that is about 50 meters from the magnificent breakers that roll in from the Atlantic.
To return to Caleta retrace your steps back to the roundabout, and follow the sign for Antigua. You can then return to Caleta along the road that took you to Antigua earlier in the day.
