Windsurfing Kiteboarding World Cup, 21st July to the 5th August 2006
Windsurfing is a popular pastime all around the island of Fuerteventura. There are many locations around the island that you can use, each with its own pros and cons, depending on whether you are a beginner, or practising for the world championships. These held on Fuerteventura each year in Sotovento, in Jandia.
There are many places where you can learn to windsurf on the island, and several different operators provide lesson or courses. There are often trainee windsurfers in the cove at Caleta de Fuste. They are easy to spot because to begin with they have no sail! Then they get a small one, then a large one and then disappear off to somewhere that is more challenging.
For those more experienced, there are many locations, some of them such as Corralejo bay, are easily accessed. The views of over to Lobos and Lanzarote from Corralejo are superb. The western side of the island tends to have stronger waves and the currents are stronger, so this side of the island is not really suitable for beginners.
The world championships are held in Sotovento, in Jandia each year, and have been held there for about 20 years. For details have a look at our news page and look at the July section.
If you have windsurfed at any location on the island, we would be more than happy to include your personal perspective within these pages.
We hope that the photographs taken at different locations will give you some idea of what to expect there.
