Fuerteventura Transport

Fuerteventura is around 100km in length and ranges in width from about 5km to 30km. This relatively small size means that it is possible to comfortably visit anywhere on the island and return to your base in the same day.

Buses or Guaguas

The bus services on Fuerteventura have changed quite a bit recently so we have decided to do a full page of information to cover this.

There are some sixteen different bus routes on the island. The buses run to time and are an excellent way to get around the island. It takes about 20 minutes to travel by bus from Caleta de Fuste to Puerto del Rosario, and the travel time from Puerto del Rosario to Corralejo is around 40 minutes.

If you travel around on buses quite often you can get a discount card which costs 12 euro. This gives you 20% off each journey. You put it into a machine behind the driver and tell the driver where you are going. If there is not enough in your ticket then you have to pay the rest in cash. You cannot use two tickets for one journey. You can buy these in the bus station in Puerto, from the driver or from various venues around the island.

Taxis

Taxi's are quite cheap on the island, but you must remember that you cannot order them in advance, nor can the taxi's pick up passengers outside their own area, eg a Puerto taxi cannot pick up in Caleta.

Travelling by Car

The roads linking the main population centres on the island are generally of a high quality. Some of them, such as that from Costa Antigua to the town of Antigua are very new and do not appear on most maps.

The islands probably has more miles of tracks than tarmacced surfaces. It is possible to negotiate a lot of them with care, but if you have taken the car hire option , then you should be aware that your insurance may not be valid if you are anywhere other than on a "proper" road.

Ferry Services

The ferries that run between Fuerteventura and some of the other islands are more about getting to or from the island. You can find the timetables by following the links to the right.

Trains

Trains?, what trains? The closest thing to a train on the island are the tourist trains like the one that travels up and down Chipmunk Mountain. There is also a tourist train in Corralejo.

Camels

When the first intrepid tourists arrived on the island, going to Corralejo involved a six hour camel ride. In Caleta there are couple of camels that will take you there and back! You can also ride a camel at the La Lajita zoo.
