Gran Tarajal is the largest town in the municipality of Tuineje. It is built at the mouth of the Rio Gran Tarajal, but don't expect to find any water flowing for most of the year. There is a new harbour that has fishing and sports facilities and it is the home of an annual deep sea fishing contest, an international event that is held each Septemeber.
There is an expansive beach at Gran Tarajal, that consists of a fine black sand. The bathing seems to be safe, and showers are provided at points on the promenade which adjoins the beach. We recommend you use these as the black sand seems to stick more readily than the other varieties we have lain in.
Being built at the mouth of a river, that has carved its way through the cliffs, many of the streets in Gran Tarajal are quite steep. They are also narrow and work is ongoing to improve the flow of traffic. The many bars and restaurants are predominantly owned by Canarians.
Gran Tarajal has a large range of shops, but being a mainly Spanish town these tend to be closed in the early afternoon, for the siesta. We assume you can buy anything you need in Gran Tarajal but as we went purely for the sunbathing, we can't be sure!
Close to the harbour area there is a large new housing development being created. Details of some of the properties for sale can be seen at Gran Tarajal properties .
