Lanzarote

Lanzarote is only a short distance from Fuerteventura and the town of Playa Blanca can be seen gleaming white in the distance from Corralejo.

An ambitious plan to build a bridge linking Lanzarote and Fuerteventura so that it would be possible to travel by train between the north of Lanzarote and the south of Fuerteventura have been posited, but for the foreseeable future the only options involve crossing by boat or a very long swim.

The normal ferry journey takes between 25-40 minutes depending on the speed of the craft you are travelling on, whilst the fast ferry does the crossing in only twelve minutes. The ferries travel between Corralejo and Playa Blanca and it is possible to take a car from one island to the other. If you are using a hire car you need to check that you are covered by the insurance if you travel from one island to the other.

Tourists travelling from Fuerteventura to Lanzarote for one of the full day trips take in some or all of the major attractions, which are Timanfaya National park, Jameos del Agua, La Cueva de los Verdes, El Golfo, Los Hervideros, Castillo de San Gabriel, Casa Museo and the Monumento al Campesino.

Those coming from Lanzarote to Fuerteventura will find that there is plenty to do in and around Corralejo.

The Marina Rubicon is a large harbour, and is also the setting for water sports events, such as transatlantic races, fishing competitions, regattas, surfing competitions etc.

There is also a market held at the Marina Rubicon, only a kilometre away from the harbour, which is held on Wednesdays and Saturdays 9am to 2pm. Here you can buy the usual range of leather goods, clothing and souvenirs that you would expect on a Canarian market plus a few more unusual items.

There are a couple of beaches in Playa Blanca, but going to Lanzarote from Fuerteventura to visit its beaches, is pointless as Fuerteventura has enough beaches to keep even the most ardent beach lover happy.
