Tindaya Fuerteventura

Tindaya is a typically Fuerteventuran village, spread over a wide area, in the north of Fuerteventura, set under the sacred Mount Tindaya. The mountain has been declared of Cultural Interest as it was used in the religious practices of the earliest inhabitants of Fuerteventura. Recently, the world-famous sculptor Eduardo Chillida planned to hollow out a 45m x 50m x 65m 'carved space' inside Mount Tindaya to create a unique sculpture, dedicated to tolerance, inside the mountain. The space would not have been visible from the outside but due to the death of the sculptor, the plan has been cancelled and the Mountain is to be restored to its former state.

If you want to walk up the mountain you have to make a request to the ayuntamiento, who will arrange a guide. Besides being a protected area the climb is quite difficult.

Tindaya Village

Tindaya would be an excellent place to take a three year old to teach them about animals. The a few small holdings, and you can see and or hear, goats, dogs, sheep, chickens, horses, donkeys, lizards, pigeons, cats, and various birds.

Tindaya has three bars, including one called the Tindaya Arms. There is also a small supermarket and a large multi sport facility, as well as a children's play area, which each village seems to have.

The small chapel, Ermita Nuestra Senora de la Caridad, is located at the centre of the village, next to the village square, which is the centre of attention during the villages feativities which are held in August, with the principle day being August 15th.

The area around Tindaya

Tindaya lies close to the west coast of Fuerteventura, and there is a small beach in the area that is difficult to find. The area between Tindaya and the coast is important for its birdlife and so you should keep to the track to avoid causing too much disturbance. Most of the coastline in the area is sheer cliff face, which shows some interesting geological features, such as a thin layer of much lighter coloured rock.
