Tuineje, Fuerteventura

The municipality of Tuineje is made up of the townships of Tuineje, Tiscamanita, Gran Tarajal, Tesejerague, Tequital, Las Playitas, Juan Gopar, Giniginamar and Tarajelejo. Gran Tarajal is the largest town in the municipality, though the Ayuntamiento is in Tuineje. The address of the Ayuntamiento is Plaza de San Miguel 1, Telephone 928 164 045/353/354, Fax 928 164 186

Tuineje promotes itself with the phrase authentic Fuerteventura, and it is certainly the case that the resorts in the municipality have a more Spanish feel than those to be found in some of the other municipalities.

It is the most southerly municipality, though the orientation on most maps of the island suggest otherwise. It has areas of unspoilt natural beauty, and its coastline consists of cliffs separated by the mouths of the large valleys. These tend to have towns based around them.

There is a new harbour at Gran Tarajal, and the beach consists of fine black sand. There are a couple of showers at the edge of the beach and its best to use them to get rid of the sand which tends to stick. There are many shops to be found in Gran Tarajal as well as many bars and restaurants

The main holiday resort is Las Playitas, where there are two hotels and villas south of the old village. This area is being developed into a specialist sports resort as there is an 18 hole golf course, an Olympic size outside swimming pool, gym and other sports facilities. The resort has a black sand beach, and is used for sailing, diving and snorkelling.

The lighthouse, El Faro de la Entallada, near Las Playitas was built in the early part of the 20th century and is typical of the island. The drive to get up to the lighthouse is quite hair-raising as it is a narrow track and rises quite steeply.

In the centre of Tiscamanita there is a windmill information centre. Churches of note are Saint Michaels parish church, Iglesia Parroquial de San Miguel in Tuineje there are scenes in this church of the battle of Tamasite, 1740, where the natives, rebelled the English Invaders, a scene which is re enacted each year.
